RGranddad Adds New Cousins from the Gottlieb Family!
So the name John Sherrington Ashton has a nice British ring to it, don’t you think! Well, it should my family immigrated from Lincolnshire, England in 1851. But how about the name John Sherrington Gottlieb!! Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it does it. But through the wonders of Ancestry and DNA testing. I have discovered that he does have a branch on my family tree!
It all started the other day, when I noted a new extremely high 4th to 6th cousin match from a person with the user name of glgottlieb1. Looking at the name, my first thought was that he would have a German connection to my tree. So I was shocked, when I previewed his limited tree (10 people), and saw that the name we shared was ASHTON! His grandmother’s name was listed as Catherine Ashton. When I checked our shared locations I saw that his father, Lawrence Emil Gottlieb born on May 6, 1907, was born in Philadelphia! When I found the family in the 1910 census, I saw that Mary was born in New Jersey as was her father and mother. She was 28 years old putting her birth around 1882. Emil was born in Illinois, and his parents in Denmark Additionally, all
Now came some connecting! My great-grandfather John Sherrington Ashton was born in 1858 and married his first wife Mary E. Warwick in 1881 In my tree I have four children for Mary and John. Blanche, Edward, Horice and William. The earliest child was born in 1884. Looking anew at the 1885 census for Beverly and discovered that John and Mary did have a daughter Mary who was between 0 and 5 in 1885! So that fits right in with my Mary Ashton becoming Mary Gottlieb.
By 1920 the Gottlieb Family had moved to Baltimore, Maryland. Emil and MAry now had five children. Francis A. 18 Clarence E 15, Lawrence E. 12, Catherine M. 9 and low and behold John S, Gottleib 3 years! After much searching my wife Kathleen aka the best genealogist ever, came up with a death date and confirmation that his name was in fact John Sherrington Gottlieb that fact along with the DNA match is enough for me to add this Gottlieb family to my family tree!!
Along the way, we discovered that Emil and Mary were married in New York City and I would still like to get the marriage certificate to confirm everything!!
The Rest of the Story…….
The sad part of the story is that Mary E Ashton died in 1892. Of Mary Catherine’s siblings, Horice died at the age of 1 year, Edward at 18 and Blanche died around the age of 18 (I know I have a death certificate somewhere, info that didn’t make it to my tree), William is the only child to live to an old age. The last record I see for William or Uncle Bill as my mother remembered him, is a Social Security Application filed in 1950 when Bill was around 66 years old! My direct line continues with John’s second wife Margaret McCloskey my great-grandmother!
