New Prog Rock from Australia’s Kettlespider – Kettlespider

Kettlespider – Kettlespider

So this morning I went on a short quest to find some new prog rock to which to give a listen. My first stop was progstreaming.nl. The first album that I listened to briefly was titled Latitude from a band called Lesior. It was not exactly what I was searching for. So I continued reviewing the albums. Actually, I didn’t go very far because the next self-titled album Kettlespider looked interesting. So I quickly went to Spotify to check it out!

I knew I would like this album when I saw that the list of Related Artist on their overview page included: Sky Architect, Cosmograf and Arabs in Aspic. I have listened to and enjoyed each of those bands in the past. After the first few minutes of the first track, I knew my assessment was correct!

One of the things that I love about progressive rock is that a lot of the bands are totally instrumental. And the love of that music goes way back into the 70s when I listened to Soft Machine and other progressive rock bands before they were progressive rock bands!

About Kettlespider

Kettlespider is a heavy prog band from Australia. their music is instrumental, inspired by the progressive rock of the seventies. (see Soft Machine) However, they play with a modern fusion-metal punch. The band formed in 2011. The founding members include: Simon Wood (drums), Harris Boyd-Gerny (guitar), Scott Ashburn(guitar), Geoffrey Fyfe (keyboards) and Colin Andrews (bass)

Kettlespider debuted with an independently released concept album  Avadante in 2012The album received critical acclaim from publications like Classic Rocks “Prog” magazine and HeavyBlogisHeavy. It was also one of Proarchives “Top 100 Albums of 2012.

Since then Kettlespider released  two singles ”The Transcent” and ”Inevitable”, in 2013, and in 2o14 they recorded a live set at Melbourne’s prestigious Black Pearl Studios. The result was the album Live at Black Pearl. The album captures the band’s incredible musicianship and energetic live performances. As such, it resulted in the establishment a loyal following for the band in Europe and Japan.

About Kettlespider the Album

Kettlespider the album is the result of the band’s “build a spider” project initiated in 2016. The project was started after the band headlined the inaugural ”Vision Festival” in Adelaide. During the “Build a Spider” project the band recorded and released a new song or “leg” of the spider, every month for eight months.

In a review of Kettlespider at Progarchives Bruford Freak writes:

A five stars masterpiece of instrumental progressive rock music. While I see lots of potential for improvement–both is sound and composition–these guys are definitely on to something!
