Thoughts of Two Eggs Sends My Mind to “Navajo Rug”
So I have this habit that when I hear certain names a special songs pop into my head. For example, when I am introduced to someone named Jennifer, my mind zooms to Tom Paxton’s song written for his first daughter Jennifer – “Jennifer’s Rabbit” Oh and if I am introduced to a Kate or Katy my mind goes to the song Tom wrote for his other daughter Katy!
Whenever I see a co-worker of mine at Target named Sharon I am taken to David Bromberg`s song “Sharon” that opens like this….
I was at this carnival, just a few years ago
No big deal, ferris wheel, the same ol’ stuff you know
And I wandered around the grounds until I found this little tent
Man outside made a speech, and this is how it went
“She walks, she talks, she crawls on her belly like a reptile”
It was the same ol’ line, except for one part
He said “It don’t cost no money, you gotta pay with your heart.”
Oh, Sharon, what do you do to these men?
You know the same rowdy crowd that was here last night is back again
I don’t know if Sharon would be thrilled with the song.
The other day I was working with a team member named Phil. And whenever I hear Phil, the jukebox in my head flies to Tom Paxton’s “Phil. ” A song about the sulfide of his friend Phil Ochs.
From Two Eggs to “Navajo Rug”
Well today it wasn’t a person’s name that sent my mind flying to a song it was an item on my shopping list. I needed two eggs for the pumpkin muffin mix I was buying for my wife. Immediately as I said to myself I need two eggs my mind flew to the opening line of Ian Tyson’s song “Navajo Rug”……
Well it’s two eggs up on whiskey toast
And home fries on the side
Wash it down with the road house coffee
Burns up your insides
Just a Canyon-Colorado Diner
And a waitress I did love
I sat in the back neath an old stuffed bear
And a worn out Navajo rug….
Here’s my favorite cover of the song performed many years ago by Jerry Jeff Walker
Addionally, here’s a playlist containing the first four songs sited in this post!
