Tinsley Ellis Kicks off an Eclectic Music Day

Morning MusIc from Tinsley Ellis

The other day I was listening to Bluesville on Sirius-XM hoping to find some new blues music. Rather than finding new music I rediscovered an old favorite. Shemekia Copeland was the DJ and she played a track from Tinsley Ellis’s new album Ice Cream in Hell set to be released next month. From his website…

World-renowned Atlanta-based blues-rock guitar virtuoso, soulful singer and prolific songwriter Tinsley Ellis will release his highly-anticipated new Alligator Records album, Ice Cream In Hell, on Friday, January 31, 2020.

Filled with blazing, every-note-matters guitar playing over the course of 11 instantly memorable original songs, Ice Cream In Hell is, according to Ellis, the most raw-sounding, guitar-drenched album of his career. Throughout the album, Ellis’ deeply emotional, lyrical guitar solos perfectly match his fervent vocals. Rolling Stone says Ellis plays “feral blues guitar…non-stop gigging has sharpened his six-string to a razor’s edge…his eloquence dazzles…he achieves pyrotechnics that rival early Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. I don’t remember the title of the track she played but it sounded pretty good. Anyway when I went out to run some errands I took my iPod (yes I still use it) and I cued up an old Tinsley Ellis album Trouble Time. I’ve been a fan of Tinsley’s since the mid-90s and Trouble Time is one of the first albums I picked up. I think I still have it on cassette!

While I have enjoyed Tinsley’s most recent albums, I don’t think the guitar work matches the intensity of his earlier work. Hopefully, the new album will recapture that intensity!

Later in the day,  I.had a bout an hour drive to take my daughter’s fiance Marcus to.meet her at the school.where she works in Plainsboro NJ. From there they were taking the train to Newark to catch their flight to Portugal. They are going to visit Marcus’s grandmother. who is not doing well. Anyway, I didn’t listen to.any music.on the way there, but I did in the way home!I

Music for the Trip Home

I started the trip with Resistance the latest album from the Prog.band IQ. While I was enjoying it, I have been listening to the album quite a bit lately. so I decided.to switch to.something else.

I switched genres totally and listened to the latest release from Folk artist Ellis Paul The Storyteller’s Songbook. I really enjoyed this album when I first listened to it back in the summer, but I haven’t listened to it in a while. It certainly deserves a more detailed review. So I’ll give it a.few more listens and try to write something soon. Until then you can check out one of my favorite tracks “FI’ve Alarm Fire on the 4th of July” here

I ended the day listening to various  Nuevo Flamenco guitarists on Pandora via Pandora radio based on the music of.Johannes Linstead. I wrote down the names of several of the artists whose names I don’t know! so hopefully I’ll find some new artists to.listen to and write.about! You can check out the last post I wrote about Johannes Linstead here.

Let’s go back to Tinsely Ellis and go  into the afternoon with  “The Axe”  from Trouble Time!  I wonder if The Ellis in Tinsley Ellis subconciously led me to Ellis Paul?
