Danish Space Rock from Causa Sui

Causa Sui – Return to Sky – Psychedelic/Space Rock-Denmark

So this morning I was looking for some music to start my day. I went to Spotify and then to Browse and My Discover selections. The second album among the ‘Top Recommendations for You’ was the album Return to Sky from  the band  Causa Sui. Having no idea about the band or the genre of music that they played, I gave them a try. What I heard was a pretty interesting instrumental band.!!

About Causa Sui

While I was listening I did a Google search for the band the first result led me to Wikipedia at Wikipedia I discovered that the band calls Denmark home and  at El Paraiso Records, I read the following:

Causa Sui consists of Jakob Skøtt, Jonas Munk, Rasmus Rasmussen and Jess Kahr, and have released eight albums since 2005. The trilogy set Summer Sessions that saw the band move away from the heavy-psych of their two first albums to more abstract, instrumental sounds that owes as much to electric Miles Davis or Can as to american stoner-rock.

Causa Sui’s sound has been described as the sound of a giant wave rolling up through the last four decades of rock. Read More

Ok, so Causa Sui hails from Denmark and their music style ranges from heavy-psych to American stoner-rock, Sound like they’re definitely a progressive rock band that would be found on ProgArchives so I pointed my browser to ProgArchives where I discovered that they are in fact listed at ProgArchives. They are included in the Psychedelic/Space Rock sub-genre.

Originally, Causa Sui formed as four-man band in the summer of 2004. The members all had extensive experience in hardcore metal bands. The band pursued progressive and experimental music, because  members were not fond of the Danish pop music scene of the day . They found their true niche playing  heavy psychedelic and stoner rock. And they have no desire to change!

Causa SuiPsychedelic rock and Krautrock have both influenced the musical style of Causa Sui, Additional influences include 60s rock, blues, and 70s heavy metal, Vocalist Kasper Markus left the band after the second album. The remaining trio consists of  a quartet to a trio Jakob Skøtt (drums and percussion), Jess Kahr (bass) and Jonas Munk (guitars, keyboards, electronics and vocals)

About Return to Sky

Return to Sky is Causa Sui’s tenth album. The tracks on the album vary in length from “The Source” at 6 minutes and 36 seconds to the title track “Return to Sky” at 11 minutes and thirty-eight seconds. The total time for the album is a little over 45 minutes. At 45 minutes in length, Return to Sky is a perfect to be the soundtrack of a run. Now, I only have to start running again.

Bottom-Line

I have to give Spotify credit for getting my taste right on this album. The album didn’t blow me away, there appeared to be a sameness on each track. But I did like the album and I will certainly listen to it again. Maybe I’ll listen on a run!
