Peter Kater’s Resonance, Yoga and Meditation a Perfect Trifecta
Over the last several weeks, the soundtrack for my morning meditation has been Resonance from New Age pianist Peter Kater. Resonance is Peter ‘s latest release. I think that it is one of his best albums. Several years ago, I discovered the Native American flute of R Carlos Nakai. Soon after that discovery I found the music of Peter Kater through his many collaborations with R Carlos. Many of the albums that they recorded together can be found in my music library. Through his work with R Carlos Nakai Kater developed a love and appreciation for the earth and indigenous cultures. This inspired him to invite more indigenous artist to work with him on various projects. The artists he invited include: Joanne Shenandoah, Bill Miller, Rita Coolidge, Robert Mirabel, Joseph Firecrow, Marty Youngblood, Douglas Blue Feather, Kevin Locke, Jorge Alfano and Ara Tokatlian..

Last night as I looked down the Zone Music Reporter Top 100 Airplay Chart the album at number 7 caught my eye. The album was titled Matters of Balance and the artist was Richard Carr. The album cover looked pretty cool and I had never heard of Richard Carr so I opened up Spotify to check the album out. So I put the album on an picked up my book and started to read. Pretty soon I was doing more listening than reading!!

So yesterday morning’s acoustic guitar mix began with a few tracks from Acoustic Alchemy’s album Blue Chip. The great acoustic guitar vibes continued with music from albums by Alex de Grassi and Brooks Williams, two of my favorite acoustic guitarists. Alex de Grassi‘s music came on in the middle of the commute I listened to a few tracks from the album A Windham Hill Retrospective. The music for the last part of the commute was composed of music from Brooks Williams’ album Little Lion a favorite of mine!

The Morning Run……
So if there ever was a morning that had a good excuse for not running, today was it! We babysat Oliver last night and didn’t get home until 1:30 this morning!! While I knew it would be hard to get up at 7 to run this morning, I thought well maybe 7:30 would work. When the alarm went off this morning I thought “Do I really want to do this?” The answer was less than a resounding yes! But at least it was a yes! The more I thought about it I thought well I will be running tomorrow – that will be ok! No – I said today was to be your long day – it doesn’t matter how fast you go, you just have to make it happen – so just do it!! My pre-run routine was the same as Friday, except for the head smack because today was not a Kundalini/Weights day, so doing the Meditation Preparation Routine was fine!!

I discovered the fantastic guitar of Lawson Rollins a few years ago. My first encounter with his music was through his work as part of the duo Young & Rollins, then in 2013 I met the solo artist, when I listened to his 2013 release Full Circle. In both settings,Rollins is amazing! Just ask Guitar Player Magazine who says this about his playing: “ungodly classical chops…dazzling speed, uncanny accuracy and beautifully delicate touch.” That artistry is on display again on Rollins’s latest release Traveler.

So last week I instituted a new item into my daily routine, The Music and Reading Hour. The idea is to set aside an hour a day to listen to music from musicians that I don’t know and read the books that I am currently reading. The first Music and Reading Hour featured five jazz artists, while the second featured four New Age artists. One of those artists was Johannes Linstead, I listened to a few tracks from Linstead’s latest release Midnight Rhumba.

Many times I am drawn to an album by the album cover’s art work. That was the case with the album at #7 on the Zone Music Reporters December Chart, Endless from Rick Sparks. The second thing about the album that caught my eye was that the album is a self-release. It seems I’m always drawn to these albums!. Hurrah for the little guy! But it was the quiet,and relaxing beauty of Spark’s piano playing that ultimately made this one of the most enjoyable New Age albums, I have listened to in a while! The tag line on the album reads “Quiet Piano to Replenish Your Soul”and that’s just what it did for me!
