Folk Monday – Red Horse – Patrick Bloom

So today has been another of those days that has slipped by quickly. I started early 7 am got off about 4 pm came home took a nap, ate, puttered around ran five miles checked out the Roots Music Report Folk Charts saw lots of new names and now it’s time to go to bed, so I can start all over tomorrow at 7 am! Anyway I listened briefly to the new folk trio Red Horse featuring Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky three artists whose music I enjoy! What I heard I liked so I will try and listen tomorrow and maybe write more tomorrow night, oh that’s when I’m supposed to be writing about Twangy. So maybe I’ll listen to Tim O’Brien’s Chicken and Egg CD again, too! Read More

Folk’s Music Monday

Charlie Dunn

ok so listening to “Mr. Schwinn” yesterday reminded me about one of the things I love about folk music and that’s that a lot of the music is about folks! Story songs about the men and women who make up this great country and touch the lives of the  people that write the songs. They may be real or sometimes fictional or sometimes a combination of  the two but real or not I love their stories. Read More

Sunday Mix – Miller, Snider, and Purpose

So this morning I loaded into the mp3 players a few albums that I hadn’t listened to in a while to go to the grocery store. Three of the albums were Bill Miller’s Raven in the Snow, Todd Snider’s Songs for the Daily Planet and Darryl Purpose’ album Traveler’s Code. I don’t really think I’ve mentioned a lot about these three guys but they are three of my favorites. Read More

Folk Monday – Matt the Electrican and Tom Paxton

So I saw this video that Music Fog did of Matt the Electrican, who is actually someone I’ve listened to a couple of times but never a full album. I was intrigued by the instrument and the music so I went to Rhapsody today and looked for the new album Animal Boy which they didn’t have,  instead I loaded Long Way Home his 2004 release on the mp3 player. I have been listening all day and I really like the album. The album is full of quirky songs like “Valedictorian” where the Valedictorian takes her clothes off and says “I ain’t never gonna see you folks again” and “Water” and there are a lot of other good songs. Sunday Shopping Mix – Part I

ok so reconnecting with and writing about Erica Wheeler made me remember what I used to do on Sundays and that was to create a two hour random playlist from my mp3 library. So today that’s what I did today and I listened to alot of artists that I haven’t heard for a while. Read More

Blues – Grass Wednesday – Leftover Twang – 2

The second band that caught my attention yesterday was Acoustic Endeavors and their album On a Farm. On a Farm is a  2005 release from a band formed by Warren Anderson and Kelly Green in 1992, when they realized they needed an outlet for their music. The band now calls Anderson’s hometown Roanoke, Virginia home. Through the years musicians have shift around the core of Anderson and Green the current line-up consists of: Read More

Come Sunrise – Rita Hoskings

So one of the albums that I’ve been listening to this week is Rita Hosking’s 2009 release Come Sunrise. I came across the album because it is currently number 46 on the Roots Music Report – Folk Chart. The albumwas nominated as “Best Country Album” in the 2010 Independent Music Awards. While she hails from Davis, California this album has it’s sound firmly planted in the hills of Appalachia and Texas and part of that may be a result of the producer, engineer and Robert Earl Keen guitarist, Rich Brotherton and the fact that the album features  some of Austin’s best musicians – Lloyd Maines on Dobro, Glenn Fukunaga on upright bass, and Danny Barnes on banjo, Warren Hood on fiddle, and  Brotherton who plays several instruments himself and Sean Feder from Hosking’s backing band Cousin Jack on percussion and harmony vocals. But then it may just be what she grew up listening to. On her myspace page here’s what she says about her influences: Read More
