Tony Rice -R.I.P. Day 7 of Folk Music Challenge
On Christmas Day last month the Bluegrass world lost a true legend, when Tony Rice passed away. Rice is arguably the best bluegrass guitarist ever!
I confess that through the 70s and 80s I knew who he was , but never listened much to the groups in which he was a member. Progressive bluegrass groups like J D Crowe and the New South and the David Grisman Quintet.

A 30-Day Folk Music Challenge leads to a Revitalization
Paul Speer – Sonoran Odyssey – A New Favorite!
Yesterday I spent time reviewing the latest Zone Music Reporter Radio Play Top 100. It’s a chart for New Age Music. The title of the album at number 48 was Sonoran Odyssey by Paul Speer. The title was interesting for a couple of reasons first my wind raced from Sonoran Odyssey to Sonora‘s Death Row by Robert Earl Kean. Then the name Paul Speer sounded familiar and I thought I may have listened to his music previously.
Matthew Halsall a Salute to You for Salute to the Sun!
So I sat down this afternoon to read some more in The Silent Wife , the latest release from Karin Slaughter. Prior to starting to read, I reviewed my Release Radar on Spotify. Release Radar is a collection of music I may like, containing both recently released albums and singles from soon to be released albums. I was looking for a new jazz or New Age album. What I found, and picked to listen to, was the latest release from Mathew Halsall Salute to the Sun.
Cindy Blackman Santana – Jazz Drummer Born Nov 18,1959
As a bandleader and as a musician, Cindy is a sound innovator with a passion for pushing creative boundaries and exploring movement and change. She is as known for the nuances and colors she brings to her beats and fills as she is for the sheer power of her soulful playing. “Some drummers act, some react. Some keep time, others create it. Cindy Blackman Santana is among the few who can,” writes Mike Zwerin for the International Herald Tribune. More Bio

Christian McBride Big Band – For Jimmy, Wes and Oliver a Winner
So this morning I decided to listen to some jazz, while I was doing some things around the house. The album I chose was For Jimmy, Wes and Oliver from the Christian McBride Big Band. I generally don’t listen to big band albums. However, because this album was obviously dedicated to Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery, and Oliver Nelson listening to it was a no brainer. The Dynamic Duo and The Further Adventures of Jimmy And Wes are two of my favorite albums.
