Life’s Soundtrack (that could have been) – Pictures from a Time Traveler – Marcus Jidell
Evergrey and Dragonforce are two of my son Andrew’s favorite bands and over the last few years they have been in my music library. Music from both bands often becomes my running music, Dragonforce by choice and Evergrey by happenstance. Many times a track from Evergre4y will come on when the iPod is on random shuffle. When that happens, I usually catch myself thinking this sounds good, then after checking who the and is, and I discover it’s Evergrey!! Now the question you may be asking about now is – why are you telling me this?? .The answer lies in the music I was listening to last night and hoped to make the soundtrack of my run tonight!!
Yesterday, I was looking for some new prog rock. to listen to and tried several new releases. I gave each of them the 30 second test and settled on the album, Pictures From A Time Traveller from Marcus Jidell . The decision to pick this album was a combination of the 30 second test and reading the following at New Prog Rock Releases:
Lunchtime Music from Batdorf and Rodney – “One Day”…..
So sometime in 1971 or 72, I was walking through the Graham Area lobby at the University of Florida and two guys were playing guitars and singing. I sat down and listened and was blown away by the songs. When they finished, I asked if the songs were theirs and they said, no they were covering Batdorf and Rodney. Within a matter of days, you know I was at the local record store looking for their album!! What I found was Off the Shelf and that album has been “off the shelf” and on my record player, in my CD player and now on my mp3 player for the last forty years.
Today in Music – 1930 – “Saxophone Colossus” Sonny Rollins is born!!
So while today is a sad day for the rock world, losing Keith Moon, it is a happy day for the jazz world, because on this day in 1930 Sonny Rollins, the “Saxophone Colossus” was born! From his biography page at his website:
“Into the Night” with Fruition – Just One of Them Nights (and it is!)
So last night, when I went to Target to pick up a few things, I listened to the last release from a band that I’ve had on the iPhone for a little while now Fruition, Just One of Them Nights. Now when I came home from work tonight, as I was eating and getting ready to go to work at Target. I wrote a good amount about the band and the album, then the screen blinked and before I knew what was happening, I was back to the WordPress sign-in screen. That meant that everything that I had just written went away. I will try to recreate it tomorrow, but for now, let’s go “off to work” and “into the night” with the title track from this terrific Americana album!!
Life’s Soundtrack – Running’s Easier with Blues from Lisa Mann’s Satisfied!!
So I ran last night, but I didn’t write a post about the run. I ended up spending the evening transferring my iTunes library from the desktop to my laptop, because I use the laptop more than the desktop now, while I watched the Phils lose, By the time I was ready to write, I was too tired! I think the trick is to write the post as soon after the run as possible!!
Life’s Soundtrack A Good Slow Run with Katatonia!
So I ran again last night. I was going to go Sunday but the temperature topped out close to 90 degrees. The forecast for Monday had the high at 81, which is more in my comfort zone,so I waited.
Before I ran I created a new loop course that was around four miles and took of with Runmeter marking the miles and Katatonia, a progressive metal band in my ears. Overall the first three miles weren’t too bad then my heart rate. started going up, so I cut my pace back to keep it under 170! While the run seemed faster and easier, the overall pace was around that same 10:45 min per mile pace. Hey, it was still fairly warm and I did it and that’s what counts!
A Lunchtime with Old Ship Pictures in NJ, music by John Hartford!!
So over the last few days my wife has scanned and posted old photos from her grandmother to Facebook. Her grandmother was born in 1888 and most of the pictures are from 1910 to 1930. Most of them we had no idea what the pictures were of, but the amazing Paul Schopp has identified many for us. Here are a few of the pictures of ships!
Morning Music from The Brothers Comatose on the road in Idaho!
So I was already to write about my four mile run yesterday, but you know it was pretty uneventful. I felt pretty good through the first 3 miles or so and then struggled through the last mile. It was pretty close to the time that I ran over the same course last week around that 10:40 per mile pace. Wait – did I just tell you about all about my run – well not everything I didn’t tell you about how the soundtrack of the run was Ricky Scaggs and Bruce Hornsby’s new album, Live, or that I wasn’t paying close attention to it because I was again trying to keep my heart rate under control!
