Twang Tuesday – Turnpike Troubadours

So today when my downloads on emusic refreshed I downloaded the sophomore  album Diamonds and Gasoline from The Turnpike Troubadours. The Turnpike Troubadors take their name from the bumpy toll roads in their native state of Oklahoma. I had listened to clips from the album the other night and  the band sounded pretty good and after listening to the full songs I’d say they sound damn good! From their website: Read More

Twang Tuesday -Thursday – The Devil Makes Three

So the twangy band that I have been listening to this week is The Devil Makes Three and their new album Do Wrong Right. I don’t remember where I came across their name I’m sure it was on some chart.  I had briefly listened to the album a couple of weeks ago and this week I gave it another listen, and I’m glad I did because I really like this album! The music is good and the songwriting is John Prine or Todd Snider like. When the opening song contains the line “The world is a car and your the crash test dummy. You know things are going to be good. From AllMusic.com Read More

Deirks Bentley – Up On The Ridge

kayso, I am not a fan of mainstream Country Music no Tim McGraw, Faith Hill or Carrie Underwood in my collection. The closest I come are Waylon and Willie, early Hank William, Jr and Merle Haggard. Lately, Jack Ingram and Pat Green have crossed over from Texas Country to more mainstream. I do have Patty Loveless’ first bluegrass album Mountain Soul. So when I saw that Deirks Bentley had a new bluegrass album, I went to Rhapsody and put it on the mp3 player and have been listening to it this week. While Deirks voice may be a little too smooth for my taste I have enjoyed the album. Here’s what he says about the CD: Read More

Blues – Grass Wednesday – Leftover Twang – 2

The second band that caught my attention yesterday was Acoustic Endeavors and their album On a Farm. On a Farm is a  2005 release from a band formed by Warren Anderson and Kelly Green in 1992, when they realized they needed an outlet for their music. The band now calls Anderson’s hometown Roanoke, Virginia home. Through the years musicians have shift around the core of Anderson and Green the current line-up consists of: Read More

Blues-Grass Wednesday – Left Over Twang!

So yesterday I listened to several bits and pieces of albums including most of Stuart Duncan’s 1992 self-titled release which includes some of my favorite fiddle tunes; “Lee’s Highway Blues” and “Whistling Rufus”, along with a lot of other good stuff. I also listened to the second New Grass Revival album Fly through The Country. I did put two albums on the mp3 player for further listening. Both names were taken from the Roots Music Report. The first was Sweet Sunny South whose new album Carried Off by a Twister was at 36 and the other was Acoustic Endeavor whose album On the Farm is number 34 on the Internet Radio play chart. Rhapsody did not have Sweet Sunny South’s new album but did have their 2007 release Showtime so that’s what I listened to yesterday and today. Rhapsody did have Acoustic Endeavor’s album On the Farm so that went on the player, too. Of the two albums I like Showtime a little better so I’ll start with that one. Read More

Twang Tuesday – Keller and the Kells and more!

So this morning I checked the Roots Music Report and the band that jumped out was Keller and the Keels. I checked emusic and they had their new album Thief and then I had a duh moment when I read that the band was composed of Keller Williams and the Keels (Larry and wife Jenny). Now while I don’t have a Keller Williams in my collection I have heard some of his music on JamOn on XM and have liked it and was going to look him up! So I downloaded the album but didn’t get to put it on the mp3 player this AM. Consequently on my trip to North Jersey,  I listened to Donna Ulisse, Guthrie Kennard and  got reacquainted with the music of Uncle Earl! I said yesterday, I will write at some point more about these artists and I will. But when I got home, I load Thief on the player and gave it a listen and really enjoyed  it! Read More

Twang Tuesday – The Infamous Stringdusters

So today I made a brief list of some bluegrass to listen to and listened to some tracks by Josh Williams not bad but not thrilling. Then I listened to a track from the Tiger Maple String Band interesting but I just wasn’t really into the music. So I finally decided to move the the top of the chart and the number one album Things That Fly by The Infamous Stringdusters and I now know why the album is number one great picking, vocals and lyrics usually make a great album and this album has all three! The album is their second following their successful 2007 debut album Fork in the Road,  The band won three awards at the International Bluegrass Music Association Awards Ceremony in 2007 including: Emerging Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for Fork in the Road (in a tie with J.D. Crowe & the New South’s album Lefty’s Old Guitar), and Song of the Year for the title track of the album. Read More
