Blues – Running and Falling with Walter Trout – Blues for the Modern Daze

So yesterday afternoon we had a thundershower, but by the time I wanted to run the sun was out and the temperature had dropped appreciably. Oh, I should preface this by saying that the morning starting with my wife telling me that son two, Andrew was at Underwood Hospital in terrible pain! By mid-morining we knew that he was ok. It was a gallbladder attack and will require a one day surgery, but at this point the date is unknown! Anyway by 5:15 or so everything was calm so I went for a run, and everything was fine during the first 2.6 miles of the run. It was hot in the sun and cool in the shade and thankfully the toughest part of the run up Pancoat is in the shade. So I made it up Pacoast and down, up and down Harper and Cranberry and was approaching Bridgeboro road running on the sidewalk, when my right leg buckled slightly as it sometimes does causing me momentarily lose my balance. Only this time it was slightly more than momentarily and I knew I was going fall and sure enough my left hand and shoulder hit first and that sent my phone and iPod flying. Upon standing I looked around, no uneven sidewalk to blame for the fall. I brushed my self off’ looked at my slightly scraped and bloody, felt my already sore shoulder and took back off running all be it, somewhat slower. Prior to the fall I was slightly under 10 minute mile pace and at the 3 mile mark I was at 30:04 and the four at 40:17, so that I finished with a 10:0 pace and no major soreness. My knee hurt going up to take a shower but has been ok since and my shoulder is slightly more sore than normal, so all and all it could have been worse! But as I always say at least the music was good!! Read More

Life’s Soundtrack – J T Coldfire makes a plodding run fun!

So as I was plodding along tonight through the second two miles of my four mile run, I looked around and you know I didn’t see a lot of 60 year old men either  coming up behind me or in front of me, so I guess I’m doing OK! Now I know there are a lot out there that are a lot faster than me, but they’re not here in Riverside so I can feel good about my 10:06 pace over four miles tonight. Especially when I think that this time last year I wasn’t even running because of my knee! Throughout most of the run tonight I was pain free , near the end my butt was starting to hurt and when I started my sprint toward home the pain increased so my wicked sprint slowed to my normal pace! Life’s Soundtrack – Running with Possum Jenkins!

So it appears that being busy since my last run last Wednesday was a good thing, imagine that! Anyway,Thursday we went to see the Big Easy Express, Friday I worked at Target, Saturday we went to look at a wedding venue for Andrew’s wedding and last night was work at Target again, and through all that my leg is actually getting better!  So overall, I took off tonight with not much pain in my leg and waited for it to come and really throughout the four mile run the pain was minimal! There is still some slight discomfort both nothing like there had been! I ran a four mile loop at just under a 10 minute per mile pace (note to self you are 60 and coming back from an injury) and right now the leg feels good! The soundtrack for the run was a Roots Rock  band from Boone, North Carolina Possum Jenkins.  The album Carolinacanawas number 32 on the Roots Music Report Roots Rock Chart last week and 36 this week. Their music is a mixture of  country, gospel, Piedmont blues, folk and soul influences native to the Old North State and since their music doesn’t seem to fit into an specific genre they have dubbed it Carolinacana! I just call it damn good music!! The band is composed of   Nathan Turner on guitar, drums and vocals, Brent Buckner on  Harmonica and Jared Church on bass. David Brewer and David Willis both share the vocal,  guitar and drumming duties. Turner, Brewer and Willis alternate lead vocals on the album. At times the vocals remind me of Chris Knight! Anyway there’s lots of good stuff on the album. The first song that caught my attention was   “Know the Way”, which came on at about the two mile mark and thankfully an upbeat track “Mile Past Broke” came on as I made the last turns toward home!! Here’s some press from their website: Read More

Life’s Soundtrack – a slow run with some seldom heard folk music!

So for the last two weeks the pain in the upper left leg seems to be getting better and then I try to run and well “discretion is the better part of valor” and I decide not to run. Well this afternoon throughout the afternoon my leg seemed really good, so after work I decided to run. Well the pain was there, but it wasn’t really the same and it was bearable so I decided to take it slow and run for 30 minutes or so and I made it, I ran at a 10:40 mile pace but at least I did it! Now while my leg is a little sore it’s really no worse than before the run, so tomorrow should tell a lot! Read More

Life’s Soundtrack – The Infamous Stringdusters – We’ll Do It Live

A couple of weeks ago I was listening to a Podcast of the Mountain Stage Show of September 23, 2011. The show featured The Weepies, The Punch Brothers and two bands I really like  by Turtles and The Infamous Stringdusters. The Stringdusters kicked off the show. Now I had listened to and liked The Stringduster’s 2010 release Things That Fly, but that album is on the MP3 Player that is a pain to listen to because you have to hold the headphones in a certain position or you only get sound from one side, so I haven’t heard it for a while! But listening to the set on Mountain Stage I thought boy I have to check that album out again! Anyway the other day I saw that the Stringduster’s had a new release titled We’ll Do It Live. So I quickly put that on the iPod and it became the soundtrack for today’s four mile run. Their music which is a blend of old-timey bluegrass with indie jamgrass is perfect for running. The majority of the songs are uptempo songs with some great picking, which means I can just go with the flow of the music which includes some longish instrumentals! The current line-up for the band includes: Read More

The American Prospect: Robert Kuttner: Land of the Free, Home of the Turncoats

Ok so I know I keep saying that all these bloggers are describing how I feel till you’re sick of it…. but THEY ARE and Robert Kuttner outlines it well!! IT’s mind boggling that out of one side of their mouths come statements about America;’s exceptionalism and out of the other so let’s destroy it?? Am I missing something? Read More

A Morning Full of Story and Songs from Guy, Adam, Michael and Chris!

So this morning as I watched tube permeameter tests, I listened to Guy Clark‘s new album Songs and Stories and what a terrific album it is! The live album was recorded at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville and it has a great homey feel. Guy is surrounded, sitting down as he notes on the introduction track, Clark by his musical family — his longtime sidekick and co-writer Verlon Thompson, along with Shawn Camp, Bryn Davies and Kenny Malone. according to his website: “It’s a comfortable atmosphere that feels like a peek into a 3am guitar pull at The Driskill Hotel“.
The albun is full of a bunch of stories about songs like “L.A. Freeway”, and Townes Van Zant’s “If I Needed You” Shawn Kemp and Verlon Thompson both get to do a couple of songs. But obviously the real star is Guy who is just a few months short of his 70th birthday (November 6th) and sounds as good as ever! Read More

Life’s Soundtrack: John Reischman and the Jaybirds and The Wilders

So yesterday began with a trip to Newark’s beautiful Doremus Avenue on the shores of the Passaic River and while the views are not breathtaking, the music was good! The trip started off with the most recent release from John Reischman and the Jaybirds Vintag & Unique. I noticed the album early in the week when I was reviewing the Folk DJ Chart for June. The albums was number 9 on the chart. The album is a good mix of great instrumental and fine vocal tracks! The band and John Reischman are based in Vancover, British Columbia. John is one of the acoustic world’s top-ranked mandolin players and composers and it definitely shows on the album! Vintage & Unique is the bands fifth album and all of the previous albums have been highly praised: After listening to Vintage & Unique I put the fourth album  Stellar Jays on the iPod. Here’s what some folks say about their music! Read More
