Eidos ****- Kingcrow – Progressive Metal – Italy
Over the last few days the album Eidos the latest release from Kingcrow has been in my music rotation and I like it more every time I give it a listen. Kingcrow is a progressive metal band from italy. The band was originally formed iin Rome, Italy in 1996 by guitarist Diego Cafolla and drummer Manuel Thundra Cafolla. The band was originally called Earth Shaker, but was changed to Kingcrow. The name was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s poem the Raven. Eidos is the band’s sixth album. The band members have changed over the course of the band’s existence. In 2001 Ivan Nastasi joined the band providing guitar & backing vocals. Then in 2009 current lead singer Diego Marchesi joined the band. The musician line-up for Eidos looks like this….

After the release of 2013 of their fifth album In Crescendo, Kingcrow toured North America in support of Pain Of Salvation ,In 2014 Kingcrow headlined a European tour in support of Fates Warning. The material that would become Eidos.was created during that time.

Eidos is a conceptual album about choices, consequences, dealing with regret and disillusion. Their earlier album Phlegethon dealt with childhood and In Crescendo about the end of youth. Eidos can be considered the third part of a trilogy about the path of life. Musically it sees the band exploring new territories and pushing the extremes of its complex soundscape with a darker atmosphere and a more progressive attitude.
Bottom Line: Eidos – Rating ****. I really like this album and as I listen to it now I remember why. There are just some great tracks on this album. The vocals are good, great harmonies on some tracks. The a fine mixture of slow tracks and some heavy pieces all done with flair! “The Moth” the opening track caught my attention quickly, then “Slow Down” kept it. “On the Barren Ground” is terrific! Hell, I really don’t think there is a bad track on the album.Here is a portion of a review of the album from Lady Obscure……
Opening up with the pre-release single The Moth, the album quickly shows its base sound, an eclectic mixture of prog and metal, but not quite prog metal in the traditional sense. By showing instrumental capability without showing it off with unnecessary wankery, Kingcrow falls right in that special middle zone occupied by the likes of Porcupine Tree and Riverside.Though they do experiment with sounds, like on the techno-muffled Slow Down, they never sound as if they’re experimenting, all the work comes across as polished and professional. As to the concept, Slow Down also delivers the heart of it, a typical scenario of us as a race being too absorbed in our technology and being pulled in deeper and deeper.
