Folk Monday – Bettysoo

So yesterday, I was debating whether or not to run and the side that said no was winning! But I finally said, ok let’s go but first we’ll put Bettysoo’s CD Heat Sin Water Skin on the mp3 player. So I did and took off on my four mile run and Dave Terry’s drumming on the opening track “Never Know No Love” got me off to a good start and soon I settled into a great mix of well written and produced songs. As I ran I kept saying to myself that was a great line, like “Am I a dirt road you left behind? Leading to a place you don’t want to find Not paved and pretty but I took you through, Why did you decide to pick up and move, Am I a dirt road you left behind? from “Just Another Lover”  and then Blanket of night hides the ache in their souls ,Two bodies huddle with love that’s grown cold, That old twisted cedar taps, A familiar refrain on their window from “Forever” and I could go on and on so many great lines! Duh! That’s why she’s won some many awards like:

Sisters Folk Festival Songwriting Competition, Sisters, OR

Mountain Stage Newsong Songwriting Competition, Charleston, WV

Kerrville New Folk,

Wildflower Festival

Big Top Chautauqua Songwriter of the Year

and you don’t have to take my word for it, mainly because I’m well behind the curve on this one Here are  some of the great reviews and praise Bettysoo has rightfully garnered !

Anyway two of my favorite tracks “Never the Pretty Girl” and “The Next Big Thing ” came near the end of my run, which ended with a cover of  a Hank Williams tune “Lonesome Whistle” and when I was done I was glad I had run and even more glad that I had listened to Bettysoo!

For the album Bettysoo teamed with a producer Gurf Morlix who has produced albums for some of my favorite artists including, Slaid Cleaves, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Mary Gauthier.  Gurf has done a great job (doesn’t he always) mixing in just the right electric guitar which he provides, along with the previously mentioned drums of Dave Terry, Todd Wilson’s organ and Gene Elders’ fiddle to create a great sound to go with the great songwriting of Bettysoo! You can listen and see the lyrics of the songs I’ve mentioned here So go to it! Enjoy a great new talent!

Here’s Bettysoo performing “The Next Big Thing”

This was at an Andy Gullahorn show. BettySoo was in the audience and Andy asked her to come up and play. (We’ll get to Andy Gullahorn soon!)

Off now to watch Butler beat Duke (yeah right!) and finish my book Mixed Blood by Roger Smith. Yes I am still currently reading Dead Man’s Share, too
