So yesterday morning I had the iPod on shuflle when I went to get my coffee. On the way back a song came on that sounded really good I looked down to see who it was and to my surprise I didn’t recognize the name Tim Chauvin. I don’t know where the song “Winds of Change” came from or how it got on the iPod but I do know I liked it! So this morning I check out Rhapsody and found Tim’s 2003 album Winds of Change. and boy am I glad I did! A dozen well written songs sung with a great voice and accompanied by some fine acoustic guitar!
While researching for this post I found that Tim was a New Folk finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival in 2002 and in 2006 his song “Make Do” was nominated for the Best Song of the Year in the Traditional Folk Song category for The Annual Just Plain Folks Music Award and the Songwriter’s Competition at the Wildflower! Festival in Texas. After just listening to the song again the nomination is well deserved it’s a very moving song about the plight of farmers in America.
Like I said every song is great from the opening “Winds of Change”. Followed by “House in the Country” a song written before he met his wife a later track “For the Ride” was written after they had been together for a while. Tim is one of those artist who does create that “sense of place” in his music and it’s a displayed on many of the songs on the album. “Houghton’s Point”, takes you to the shores of Lake Superior while you go whaling in the song “New Bedford” (which has a Celtic feel complete with whistle, fiddle and bodran. “Winds of Change” puts you right on that rocky coast of New England. “Louie the Rabbit” teaches about the meaning of friendship through a rabbit and a child!. While “The Carpenter” is a touching song about his immigrant (grand) father.
As I researched more, I discovered that the last song “Daughters of China” (which I listened to but didn’t really hear) was a wonderful song to the adopted girls from China including members of his family! So I went back and really listened to lyrics and it is a beautiful song!! I also went to CDBaby and read some of the comments and found that the song has been an inspiration and has brought joy to a lot of families that have adopted “The Daughters of China”!
So in the words of Sing Out Magazine – Buy this album!” Because this album needs to be heard! You won’t be disappointed! You can check out the album and read the comments here
