At lunchtime today I was listening to The Village on XM Radio and the artist on sounded good. I had seen the name Tim Harrison before so I downloaded his 2005 release Grey Country onto the mp3 player and gave it a listen this afternoon. As usual I was glad I did! Also as usual, or at least at a high percentage rate lately, he’s Canadian!! It seems that most of my new favorites are Canadians, see John Wort Hannam, Tim Hus, and Rob Lutes to name a few. After listening I check out his webpage and found that Tim has been involved in music for over 45 years! From his biography at Reverbnation
Tim has worked as an artist and organizer in the folk music field for nearly forty years. He was founding artistic director of Summerfolk in 1976 and he recorded his first solo album in 1978, produced by Stan Rogers and engineered by Daniel Lanois.
Tim has been artistic director of Mariposa, Northwinds, and the Eaglewood Folk Festivals. He has recorded eight albums of his own material, and his record company, Second Avenue Records, released the first solo recordings of Mose Scarlett and of Enoch Kent. In 1999 he toured in Great Britain and since then has toured regularly in the U.S. and Canada. The Boston Globe calls Tim “Canada’s cinematic songwriter.”
Grey County is filled with great songs performed with terrific vocals. The songs are all little gems I particularly liked “Canada Gander’s Lament” a poignant song about the loss of a love. “Dan’s Song” about the risk of being different. “So long, Dr. Seuss” a song about the great author. Finally there’s a great cover of a song I knew I had heard but couldn’t quite place, Richard and Mimi Farina’s “Pack Up Your Sorrows”. In between these songs are other songs about love and life all song with Tim’s great passion!
