There have been some changes in the Neo Prog rock band Gandalf’s Fist, since their last release A Day in the Life of a Universal Wanderer. The new release A Forest of Fey, is Gandalf Fist’s first release as a four-person band! What hasn’t changed is the stellar progressive rock delivered by the band!
Gandalf’s Fist was formed in 2005 and was originally a creative collaboration between multi-instrumentalist Dean Marsh and lyricist/vocalist Luke Severn. The name Gandalf’s Fist, which conjures up images from J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, actually originated, when a friend of theirs invented the name to try to impress a geeky girl one night in a bar!! After the success of their first four albums, in particular A Day in the Life of a Universal Wanderer, The band appeared on the bill at Planet Rockstock ’13. After that performance, touring musicians Stefan Hepe and Chris Ewen were promoted to full-time band members
A Forest of Fey is the band’s fifth, full-length studio. In addition to the contributions from now full-time members Hepe and Ewen, the album features guest contributions from high profile musicians such as Troy Donockley, Clive Nolan, John Mitchell, Dave Oberle’ and Matt Stevens. The album is the psychedelic, folk-tinged journey of a young girl trapped in a malevolent woodland! Sounds like a fun time!!
The first Gandalf Fist’s album that I listened to was their 2011 release: Road to Darkness which according to their website is
… a sinister space-rock re-imagining of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by Lyman Frank Baum, chronicling the tale of a young girl transported to the alien world of Io by an evil sorcerer.
I visited them again listening to their 2013 release A Day in the Life of a Universal Wanderer where the Wanderer is…
…Transmitted from a derelict space station in the far reaches of the galaxy using instruments salvaged from a cargo bay and corroding electrical terminals,
So if you are like me and enjoy neo-prog with a dose of space-rock, that’s reminiscent of the great prog bands like Pink Floyd, check out Gandalf’s Fist A Forest of Fey!!
