So this morning’s soundtrack was Soul To Go!, the latest release from New York City tenor saxophonist, Jeff Hackworth. Currently, the album is #35 and climbing on the JazzWeek Jazz Chart. Hackworth began his musical journey playing countless gigs in the smokey clubs in his hometown of Buffalo,New York. While he played in many blues and R&B bands it was the organ trio scene that he always gravitated towards.
Along he course of his journey, Hackworth played a little of everything. Some big band swing with the Tommy Dorsey Band (Buddy Morrow Edition), some blues with the Matt “Guitar ” Murphy Band and has performed with artists like: Buddy Rich, Mel Torme, theTemptations, Blood, Sweat & Tears,Chubby Checker and the Goo Goo Dolls!
Soul to Go! is his fifth album as a leader and it is a good one! I really like the tone of Hackworth’s sax which
I read is rooted in the style of Stanley Turrentine and Gene Ammons. It is obvious that Hackworth has worked in the organ trio setting before, his interplay with Radam Schwartz is great! Schwartz provides great support for Hackworth and also has some terrific solos on the album. In his career Schwartz has played with Arthur Prysock, Al Hibbler and David “Fathead” Newman.The other outstandng player on this album is Ed Cherry whose guitar work on the album is stellar, like Radam he supports and he solos! Cherry, is best know for his many years with Dizzy Gillespie! Vince Ector holds the beat steady on drums. Ector has drummed for musicians like Chares Earland and Randy Weston.
I thought it was interesting that Hackworth’s sax sound like Stanley Turrentine, and he likes to play in organ trios, considering how often Turrentine and Jimmy Smith played together! Anyway, after listening to Soul to Go!I was reading about his prior album Night Owl when I read at CDBaby…..

Now if you have read this blog before you may know that two of my favorite instruments are vibes and organ…So I knew that i had to check out that album! I did and I love it… This one fits as a work, reading and writing soundtrack!! So Check It Out!
