Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real – Bad Run Good Tunes

Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real – Make a Tough Run Great!

Ok so  I wrote in a previous post that my running times have sucked over the last two months. Most of that can be blamed on my health worries. But over the last week or so I’ll also blame the weather. (Heaven forbid it can’t be that I’m approaching 72 years old.

Most days I determine whether or not I’m running by the Running rating on The Weather Channel. They rate the conditions for running from 1-10 as follows: 1-4 not good 5-6 ok condition, 8-10 good to excellent.

Typically, I don’t run on days with a rating of 5  or below. Yesterday early in the morning the rating was 5 between 7-8 am after which it was dipping to 4. I was feeling pretty good so I decided to go for it. Mistake!

I made it a little over a half mile before sweat started to overcome me and I said “ the hell with running!”  Over the first mile and a half I walked a little and ran a little, before I had had enough and walked the remainder of the run! Overall, I walked/jogged for 30 minutes.

Here are the Nerdy Details…..

Sticks and Stones - Lukas Nelson and the Prome of the Real cover

The Soundtrack – Sticks and Stones – Lucas   Nelson and the Promise of the Real

The soundtrack for the run was Sticks and Stones – Lucas   Nelson and the Promise of the Real.(POTR)  The album is the band’s second release and my first experience with the band. Lucas is the son of Willie and his fourth wife Annie D’Angelo.

Lucas and the Promise of the Real appear to me a true band on the run. They split their time between their on recordings and touring and their steady gig as Neil Young’s studio and touring band.  Inn addition they spend time on, the never-ending road alongside his father in Willie Nelson & Family

In the past , Nelson collaborated with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper on the blockbuster film and soundtrack, A Star Is Born turned and turned in star-making performances at festivals like Stagecoach, Newport Folk Festival, FarmAid, New Orleans Jazz Fest and the UK’s legendary Glastonbury Festival. Whoa!

About POTR and “Sticks and Stones”

Lukas Nelson and The Promise of the Real consists of bassist Corey McCormick, drummer Anthony LoGerfo, percussionist Tato Melgar, multi-instrumentalist Logan Metz and guitarist, and of course Lukas Nelson.

The band’s sound  is a blend of rock, country, soul, and folk. Lukas wrote the entirety of Sticks and Stones with his live audiences in mind. He says this about the album,

I started to realize that all of my favorite songs that I’ve written are written for what I love to do live,” he says. “And what I love to do live is play country soul funk. Something with a nice backbeat, something you can move to, and something that makes you want to sing along and shout out at the top of your lungs.”

The Bottom Line

At first I wasn’t sure, I liked this album. But It’s been the soundtrack for a couple of runs now and it’s been growing on me. Two songs in particular have caught my attention. The first was “Every Time I Drink” and the second was “Overpass”. Both remind me of Willie!

I imagine after a few more listens I’ll be singing along, maybe even at the top of my lungs! So Check It Out!
