Emerging Artists – Part 2 – Monroeville!

So I am glad that I wrote yesterday’s post about emerging bluegrass artists BEFORE my run, because after my run I was wiped out! The run was a solid 4 plus miler and my fastest time over that course this year! Anyway I apologize to the third bluegrass band that I’ve been listening to Monroeville for not posting about their self titled debut album. Monroeville is a six member band hailing  from the East Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina areas. The members are: Daniel Salyer – Vocals., Bass Travis – Vocals, Dobro Seth Taylor – Guitar Zane Petty – Banjo Matthew Munsey – Mandolin/Vocals Matt Flake – Vocals, Fiddle While the band may be new, the members have a lot of experience!  In addition to being the bass player, Daniel Salyer is also fine songwriter having cuts with Junior Sisk, The Lonesome River Band, Mark Newton and many others. Travis Houck has played dobro on stage with Alison Krauss, Dan Tyminski, and Porter Wagoner and traveled across the country representing the  East Tennessee State University (where he graduated from the bluegrass program) in their top band called the ETSU Pride Band. He was a foundational member of Barry Scott & Second Wind where he recieved a GRAMMY® Nomination for his work on their debut project, “In God’s Time.” Travis also is the founder and owner of Blue Edge Knives. At 17, banjo player Zane Petty has been nominated for a GRAMMY®, toured across the country and internationally, been featured in numerous articles and magazines and played for production shows in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Mandolinist Matthew Munsey is also talented producer and recording engineer with a GRAMMY® Nominated project under his belt for the aforementiond band Barry Scott & Second Wind. Not to be outdone by his bandmates Seth Taylor has won several guitar championships including Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina State champion. His biggest accomplishment was winning the Doc Watson Guitar Contest at Merlefest in 2008 when he was only fourteen, and then one year later, in 2009, he won the Merle Watson Banjo Championship! Matt Flake who plays fiddle in the band has won state champion competitions on three different instruments in Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, and Alabama. Together they’ve put out a great debut album with a more traditional sound then the two other bands. While I like the whole album the opening track “Rambler’s Song” is probably my favorite! So check them out! As for me I’m going back and check out some of the other emerging artist at The Mast Farm Inn Emerging Artist Page! Well looking back over the group of bands, there are several bands that I’ve already listened to and liked including: Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen, The Hillbenders. Rockin’ Acoustic Circus. Breaking Grass and Town Mountain! All I can say is the folks at The Mast Farm Inn know their bluegrass!

Twang Tuesday – Emerging Bluegrass Artists – Part 1

So the other day Rockin’ Acoustic Circus (RAC) a great young bluegrass band posted a link on Facebook to The Mast Farm Inn Emerging Artists Series for 2011. Since I really like RAC, I’ve checked out several of the other bands that are part of the series and I’ve found several new bands that I really. really like!! The three bands that I started with (see I say started with because I’m going to check them all out!) are Northern Departure, Snap Jackson and the Knock on Wood Players, and Monroevillle. Here’s what I found! Read More

Folk Monday – Old Friends Slaid Cleaves and Tom Russell!

So what’s been playing on the iPod over these last few days. A couple of the albums are the latest albums for two old favorites. The first is a two disc live album from Slaid Cleaves titled  Sorrow & Smoke: Live at the Horeshoe Lounge. I’ve been a Slaid fan since I first heard him one Sunday night on Gene Shay’s folk show. We’ve been to many of Slaid’s shows here in Philly and this album does a good job of capturing the spirit of his show. The album was recorded at two shows  one in April  4 and the other in September of 2010 at the Horseshoe Lounge in Austin. Helped out by frequent bandmates Michael O’Connor on acoustic lead guitar and vocals and Oliver Steck on accordion, harmonica, trumpet and harmony vocals, Slaid makes his way through 20 songs most of them from his last four albums No Angel Knows,  Wishbones,  Broke Down and  Everything You Love will Be Taken Awayalong with a couple of Don Walser songs, where Slaid’s  yodeling prowess is showcased. One new track “Go for the Gold” closes the show. Read More

Book 26 – The Snowman – Jo Nesbo

Although I’ve visited Norway several times through the books of Karin Fossum, this is my first trip to follow the adventures of Inspector Harry Hole of the Oslo Police Department. Book 26 for 2011 is Jo Nesbo‘s The Snowman. While I’ve heard about Nesbo for sometime I never seem to see his books at book sales or at the library. So last week when I saw this one at the library I picked it up and was certainly glad I did! This is the 7th book in the Harry Hole series and at times I thought I missed a little but for the most part I thought that the book stood on its own. Read More

Book 25 – C.J. Box – Back of Beyond

Book 25 of 2011 is C.J.Box’s third stand alone thriller Back of Beyond. Released soon after the 11th Joe Pickett novel Cold Wind  (which I started a while back and didn’t finish before it was due back at the library) Back of Beyond was a fast and furious ride through the back country of Yellowstone Park. The novel’s main character is Cody Hoyt a divorced, alcoholic cop thrown off the Denver Police force and now stationed in Montana. When Coty finds his mentor from AA dead in his burned out cabin, Coty knows it’s not the accidental death it appears to be but murder! Soon clues link the murderer to an outfitter leading tourists on a spectacular multi-day wilderness horseback trip into the remote corners of Yellowstone National Park. Coty’s  son Justin is one of the tourist on the trip with his step-father to be! Among the tourists is fourteen-year-old Gracie Sullivan, an awkward but intelligent loner who begins to suspect that someone in their party is dangerous. After accidentally shooting the coroner at the crime scene, Coty is suspended from the force and soon takes off on a chase to stop the tour and rescue his son from the murderer! The action is fast and furious and the book was a real page turner with lots of twists and turns. Here’s what some folks are saying: Read More

A Morning Full of Story and Songs from Guy, Adam, Michael and Chris!

So this morning as I watched tube permeameter tests, I listened to Guy Clark‘s new album Songs and Stories and what a terrific album it is! The live album was recorded at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville and it has a great homey feel. Guy is surrounded, sitting down as he notes on the introduction track, Clark by his musical family — his longtime sidekick and co-writer Verlon Thompson, along with Shawn Camp, Bryn Davies and Kenny Malone. according to his website: “It’s a comfortable atmosphere that feels like a peek into a 3am guitar pull at The Driskill Hotel“.
The albun is full of a bunch of stories about songs like “L.A. Freeway”, and Townes Van Zant’s “If I Needed You” Shawn Kemp and Verlon Thompson both get to do a couple of songs. But obviously the real star is Guy who is just a few months short of his 70th birthday (November 6th) and sounds as good as ever! Read More

Book 24 – Fallen – Karin Slaughter

So for seven years and six books, Karin Slaughter entertained her readers with her Grant County series, featuring Sara Linton and her husband Jeffrey Tolliver. Jeffrey was a cop and Sara a pediatrician and a medical examiner. In 2006, she started another series featuring a dyslexic Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agent Will Trent and his partner Faith Mitchell. In 2009 the two series merged (I’m not telling why) in Undone. Book 24 for the year is the 3rd book in this series Fallen This book had me from the first page and I zipped through the book looking forward to what was going to happen next. Read More

Back to Williamsburg and Book 23 – Stealing Faces

Barrett Hall

So the last couple of days have been hectic. Wednesday was a travel day down to Williamsburg, Va. to take my daughter back to college. Yesterday was spent lugging her stuff up three flights of stairs to her room. Fortunately, it was not quite as hot this year as last, but it was still hot! In addition to taking stuff from the car we also had to go and get the stuff she left in storage in the attic (the 5th floor) of a dorm a couple of dorms over from hers. That excursion included carrying the refrigerator and a large box down the stairs because they were working on the elevator! Then after we got her moved in it was time to go to Target and get the final stuff that she needed and then to The Home Depot for the rug  and the air conditioner!  But everything is moved in and her room looks great! Today was the trip home with a side trip to a cemetery in Baltimore to find some children of a distance cousin on my wife’s family tree. That trip was unsuccessful but I’m sure she took some good pictures! Read More
