Blues Wednesday – Blue Bella Records

So this Blues Wednesday, I didn’t start by checking any charts. I thought that since I had good luck last week with Blue Bella Records I’d just check and see what other bands are on their label with new albums out! What I found were two names first Matthew Stubbs and second The Cash Box Kings. So when I got to work and started work and listening I started with The Cash Box Kings album I-94 Blues. I listened to the first track “Default Boogie” a little boogie number about the current economic conditions! It sounded great but not a good sound for doing writing, which is what I was doing so I tried the other name Matthew Stubbs and his album Medford and Main. This album was great for writing since it was an instrumental album! According to his website Stubbs plays soul drenched roots and blues guitar instrumentals. Stubbs is a  great guitarist who currently plays with the legendary Charlie Musselwhite Band, as well as his own band, The Matthew Stubbs Band. He was named 2009 Outstanding Guitarist from Blues Audience Magazine and was a 2009 Boston Music Award Nominee for Blues Act of the Year. I listened for a little while liked what I heard and this will definitely be a listen while you work CD! Read More

Folk Monday Mix

So you know the routine it’s Folk Monday let’s check the Folk DJ Chart and maybe the Americana Chart for a list of some new folk music. First there was an interesting name on the Americana Chart Great American Taxi, then Sarah Jarosz (a voice I’ve heard on XM Radio The Village and enjoyed), next John Wort Hannam. So with list in hand I checked out Rhapsody. They had the new Great American Taxi CD Restless Habits and the Sarah Jarosz album Song Up in Her Head, but they didn’t have the new John Wort Hannam Queen’s Hotel so I downloaded his 2004 release Dynamite and ‘Dozers and I started working and listening. Reconnecting with… Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers

Last year my son Andrew introduced me to the band Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers he told me he thought I’d like their music. So I went with him to see them at World Cafe Live! and it was a great show. I had downloaded a couple of their albums so I knew some of the songs before the show, but still felt out of place when the show started and all the fans started signing every song! Anyway it was a great show and after the show I kept listening to some of the albums but then I change mp3 players and lost the albums. So this week I downloaded their album Americano and remembered how much I liked the album! Read More

New Blues – Nick Moss

So Wednesday when I was looking for some new blues and downloaded the Kilborn Alley Blues Band I also downloaded another album on the same label Blue Bella Records, Privileged by Nick Moss. Well I’ve listened to this album many times over the last three days and each time I listen to it I like it more and more and it’s quickly catching up the Kilborn Alley as a new favorite. Before listening to this album I had never heard of Nick Moss and evidently I was missing out on some great Chicago Blues! From his website biography Who is this Nick Moss? you can read the full biography at his website.  Chicago Blues was once synonymous with Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Rogers, Little Walter, Elmore James, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells and so many more. But today: Read More

Blues Wednesday – Part 1 – The Kilborn Alley Blues Band

So tonight, I was thinking about how to write today’s post about a new group (to me) The Kilborn Alley Blues Band and the album that I listened to first this Blues Wednesday Better Off Now and I thought, what do I like in a blues band. Well, you need a good strong guitar see Stevie Ray, Corey Stevens, Mike Bloomfield any of the guitarist for John Mayall….Kilborn Alley- Josh Stimmel and Andrew Duncannon on guitars sound pretty good to me… maybe you can throw in a little harp see James Cotton, Paul Butterfield,John Mayall, Kim Wilson …. Kilborn Alley – Joe Asselin sounds as good and bluesy as any of them…… throw in vocals with a lot of feeling take your pick of vocalists B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells… Kilborn Alley Andrew Duncannon provides some great blues vocals in a great Chicago Blues style! Maybe you mix in a little organ see Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield….Killborn Alley it’s there but I don’t know who it is! Throw in Chris Breen on bass and Ed O’Hara on drums and what do you get – A great gritty Chicago Blues Band!!! Read More

Twang Tuesday – Adam, Ron and Justin

Ok so it’s Twang Tuesday that means let’s check out the Bluegrass Chart on the Roots Music Report. I checked off several names on the list  that looked promising. One name that stood out  at number six was Adam Steffey, hum do I know that name? I thought I did but I couldn’t quite place him. So I thought let me check Dan Taminski’s site to see if he has anything new. When I went to the site,  I found  out where I knew Steffey from, he played mandolin on Taminski’s Wheels album. I then remembered that I has listened to another  band member Justin Moses’ solo CD  Dusty Road a while back and it was good. Ron Stewart the banjo and fiddle player had a solo album out also entitled Time Stands Still. So I downloaded all three albums onto the mp3 player and I had a great day of bluegrass music! Read More
