Week in Music – Part 1 – McKenna, Randall, Cromwell

So here’s a synopsis of the music that’s been on the iPOD this week so far. I’ve been kinda depressed because I’m on an unpaid furlough from my job of 31 years, so I’ve been busy doing things like filling for unemployment, etc. Anyway here’s some new to me artist and their music, after some listening there may be more extensive posts about some of these artists. So here goes:

Lori McKenna Unglamorous I was looking for her latest release Lorraine but was the most recent album that was in their catalog. I’ve seen Lori’s name a lot in posts from Mark Erelli, who often plays with her throughout the Boston area. I was surprised that her music had more of an Americana feel than I expected. But I have enjoyed the album. The ablum ss full of songs about  life and life’s problems from: a love that’s died and not knowing anything but  “How To Survive” about ,  mental and emotional problems that lead to becoming that person you see collecting cans and talking to themselves, we just all have to remember we all “Falter”. One of my favorite tracks is “Written Permission”.  All in all it’s a very nice album and I  look forward to her more of her music.

Jon RandallWalking Among the Living (2005). I’ve seen Jon’s name mostly associated with Peter Cooper but I see he also appears on Patty Loveless’ Mountain Soul album. This is another album that I really liked I enjoy Jon vocals and the songs are well written. The highlight of the album is a song that has been recorded by Brad Paisley and Allison Krauss “Whiskey Lullaby” just a beautiful song, if a song that painful can be beautiful!  Like most albums I listen to I enjoy all of the but favorites include: “North Carolina Moon”, “Baby Won’t You Come Home” and “In The Country”. Oh check the album out and  decide for yourself!!

Shaun Cromwell The Turning of Clocks a stripped down collection of some great folk music. Recorded with just one microphone this album has an old-time folk feel to it.  When I listen to instrumentals like “Death and Taxes Rag” and “Cholla Cactus Rag” I’d swear I was listening to an old Dave Von Ronk album (and that’s a good thing). The rest of the album is great, too. Cromwell’s voice is a little hard for me to  understand some times so it may take a while for me to know the songs. Anyway this one is bound to get some more plays and a more extensive write-up!!

Ok time for a break so I’ll leave you with Jon Randall and “Whiskey Lullaby”

and Shaun Cromwell “Rust Belt Comet”
